| introduction |
| By the end of january I came across an us import version of the sequel to
my favourite RPG "Chrono Trigger" for the SNES
(link points to the best SNES-Emulator for your PC). No RPG I ever played hat
that a great interaction between the characters. And I know of no game that
uses the limited sound capabilities of the SNES as good as Chrono Trigger did.
However: I played through CT last summer and I was looking for its sequel,
Chrono Cross until that day last january. The game unfortunately has never been
released in Europe, so I had the choice to either modify my PSOne or to do
it right and buy myself an US PS2 which is what I have done, mainly for not having
to play Final Fantasy X in the german synchronized version.
Anyway: Somewhere in Chrono Cross, you reach a nasty boss maned "Miguel" which
although he looks quite weak, is terribly strong and it took me hours
(actually about twelfe) to kill him. So I though, I post a little article on
how to beat this guy, as he is quite simple, if you know how to beat him.
What was special is that I had to beat him without the possibility to use
a "TurnXXX"-Element as suggested in the various
Boss
Guides out there, because I am quite a rush player, mainly eager to get the
story to develop itself, which lead me to miss buying those elements. Actually
I just had one TurnBlack in stock which had no effect on Miguel.

| description of miguel |
| The boss has about 2000 HP, is innate White and actually does two magical
combo-attacks which are quite deadly.
One is the combination between "Weak Minded" (lowers magical defense) and the
skill "HolyDragnSword". This will cause about 400 Points damage to any innate
black character, about 300 to a non-black one and less than 200 for an innate
white one.
The other combination is "Turn Black" together with either "Photon Ray" (rarely)
or "Photon Beam" (often) which causes around 200 Points of damage.
To make him even worse, Miguel quite often casts "Anti Black" which stops you
from using the most effective spells.
When in critical condition, Miguel first casts "Meteor shower" which causes
arount 150 Points of damage to each character, followed immediatly by
"Holy Light" which causes around 250 points each.
Did I say, this guy is difficult?

| low resources |
As I told in the introduction, I am quite a rush player. Techniques to make
Miquel a lot easier are
- Use Trap Holy light
- Use "Turn XXX" to weaken his white attaks
- Use a lot of revives
Unfortunatly I was not able to do any of these strategies as I had just one
revive, one "Turn Black" which did not work on him and no Trap Holy light
(if I remember correctly, everything can be bought in "Another World" on the
Isle of Marbule when still playing Serge. Going back there was no alternative
for me as I just wanted to continue in the storyline).
By the way: Casting "Seal All" to prevent Miguel from casting its Holy Light
and finishing him off with Lynx' physical attaks will not work as Seal All
does not affect Miguel.

| get starky |
| The low-stock strategy I had to use involved getting starky although I did not
know what to get from diving in the El Nido triangle when I was doing it. I
simply was demotivated from fighting Miguel over an over (and having to watch
the story sequence before the fight as you cannot save after having seen it),
so I went down to the El Nido triangle and took a dive.
Down there, I could find a "Star Fragment" of with a guy in the spell shop in
Guldove told me that one of those once saved the live of another adventurer
on the Island of the Sky dragon.
There I had to fight a strange looking boss named "Mega Starky" which, after
I defeated and catched it in a minigame, joined my party. Starky not only
looks great, he too is innate white (and as such well protected from the
attaks of Miguel) and he has quite a high value of Magic Power which is quite
handy. After all, the fight against him leaves a "MagNegate" Element which is
very useful to protect Lynx against Miguels nasty "HolyDragnSword".
After Starky joined, I went back to guldove and bought a lot of "RecoverAll"
which is great as it works exactly like "HealAll", but requires only level 3 to
be cast.
In the dead sea, in the aera where you had to fight this Highwayman, just when
you enter from the south, don't climb the stairs, but go north right of them,
then follow the path back down until you reach a tresure chest containing
"Free Fall" which causes 150 points of damage to Miguel.
If you can, you should equip Lynx with an Accessoire to protect him from
AntiBlack. I had a lot of those, so I think, they are quite common (although
I do not know the name of them any more).
This is enough of preparation. Now go back and face him.

| beating miguel |
| Lynx begins the fight. If you are lucky and do not miss your physical attacks,
you should reach spell level 6 and cast "Free Fall" on Miguel before he can
cast "Strong Minded", and thus cause 150 points of damage instead of just 100.
Miguels entering strategy is always first casting AntiBlack and next
"Strong Minded".
After casting "Strong Minded", you have a short thime before he either casts
"Weak Minded" (will be followed by HolyDragnSword) or "Turn Black". Hit him
with all you have, but don't use any attaking-spells with starky. Just use
him to heal the party.
Look to never have less than 250 HP.
When you think to have inflicted lots of damage, begin to watch your stamina
meter. At least starkys should never reach zero as you will have to immediatly
fully heal your party after Miguel casted Meteor Shower or his "Holy Light" will
kill all of you.
If you see that you cannot fully heal your party after he cast "Meteor Shower",
just "Run Away" from him and restart the battle as he will always cast
holy light and it will kill the whole party and you will have to watch the story
sequence again.
If you want to, you can starky make to cast "MagNegate" on Lynx at any time
but do it only after Miguel has cast "Strong Minded" as he always first powers
himself up before attaking.

|
| conclusion |
| After getting starky, it only took me two tries to kill miguel. He defetated me
once because I did not have enough stamina to raise my spell level high enough
to heal my party after the "Meteor Shower" and before "Holy Light". If you follow
this guide, killing Miguel is actually quite easy.
So. Now that this quide is written, I think, I just turn on my
video beamer
and continue playing. Who knows: Maybe, I will have to post another one of
these guides soon ;-)
